Say it with Flowers Blog Hop Day 5

Today is Day 5 of the Say it with Flowers Blog Hop and I am up!

I had grand plans but ran into some technical difficulties.  The flower part of my project worked out but not the item I was going to attach it to so I improvised.

This is a simple little mug rug for my daughter to set her drink on at her desk.  If you follow my blog you know that every project I have made for the last four blog hops has been an item for her room in the hot pink and black color scheme.

The mug rug is an in the hoop design from GG Deisgns in Australia-- Love her stuff. It's hard to tell in the picture but it's quilted in a diamond pattern.    The flowers are sewn in the hoop also.  The design is from Reen Wilcox at Embroidery Garden-- Love her stuff too!

What makes the flowers crinkly is this stuff called Texture Magic that you sandwich in between the layers of fabric and batting and then steam with an iron.  It shrinks the fabric by 30% in all directions.  I love the way it looks.  I got lucky and found the stuff at my local quilt store the Quilt Asylum.

I had never heard of Texture Magic until Reen postedon her Embroidery Garden Facebook page.    Now I want to buy the stuff buy the bolt, here is what the package looks like.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the blog hop.  BTW:   I am hosting a Patriotic Sewing Swap... scroll down to read more about it.  Please visit these other ladies too!

Other Flower Projects

Here's a small collection of flower projects I have made:

Rosebud burp cloth and bib set.

Quilted laptop case.
Another in the hoop flower.  This is actually a barrett for my daughter.

In the hoop 3d rosebud, also a barrette.
Thanks for scrolling down.

American Spirit Sewing Swap

I was chatting with one of my good friends whom I met through a sewing swap and we were talking about how a patriotic swap would be kinda fun.  So in celebration of Memorial Day, I am hosting a swap due the week BEFORE Independence Day.  I know it's less than a month before the stuff is due so don't sign up if you can't meet the deadline.

So here it is, the show your American Spirit Sewing Swap.  Make 2-3 handmade patriotic items for your partner, include something edible and something unique from your hometown, region or state.  Sign up by May 31, receive assignment and partner info by June 1 and mail by June 27th for arrival the week of 4th of July.

I'll be creating a Flickr group and we can tag stuff on Instragram with #spiritsewingswap.  Thanks for participating, I can't wait to see what everyone makes!

Flip Flop Zipper Pouches

Remember the summer flip flop pouches I showed the other day, well-- I had someone order five for a girlfriend beach trip.  Isn't that fun!

Instead of embroidering the letters, I did applique this time.  I did them all different too....  These shipped to Alabama the other day...
I wish I was going on a beach trip with girlfriends!   We keep talking about a trip somewhere but can't decide where...  we'll get it figured out soon.   Have a great day!

Vocabulary Parade

Second grade is ending soon.  This week's activity was a Vocabulary Parade based on the book by Debra Frasier titled "Miss Alaineus - A Vocabulary Disaster".  The teacher sent us this video so we could get an idea of what to do.  That helped alot because I was really puzzled.

Micaela's word was GIGGLE.

So how do you illustrate the word giggle in a costume.  We brainstormed ALOT.  Let's just say Micaela's imagination exceeded the supplies in my craft room and serious negotiations took place throughout the evening.  In the end, this is what we did....

We cut circles out of felt and made funny GIGGLE faces and expressions with buttons for eyes and lots of different yarns for hair.  We pinned the faces to her skirt.

Here is Micaela with two buddies, Patriotic and Beverage

Here is BEVERAGE talking to PASTRY

Here is STURDY
This was alot of fun, makes me want to be a teacher.  Hope you are having a great week.

Twenty Years ago...

Twenty years ago TODAY was a happy day for me and my family...

I was the first college graduate in the family.... This was a big moment for my Dad who although born in the US did not have the opportunity to attend college and instead enlisted in the Army, served our country and went back home to be a successful entrepenuer.  Unlike most parents, he was always thrilled to pay my tuition and expenses while in college.  So happy my younger brother, nephews and nieces have followed suit at other universities around the country.   Twenty years has flown by!

On the Go Reading Pillow

This weekend we were invited to celebrate Cousin Desmon's birthday.  The theme for his party was "Batman at the Zoo" so lots of jungle and safari stuff with Batman all rolled up into one theme.  Only a 4 year old boy would think of that.

We don't do toys for gifts so I had to get creative since I don't make boy stuff very often.  Luckily, I knew about the Batman theme in advance so when I was traveling last month and came across Batman fabric and I very quickly snatched up a half yard to make "something".

I've been thinking of what to make for weeks, I had a pillow in mind but nothing special beyond the name embroidered on it.  Then, I was on the Polkadot Chair blog last week and was browsing tutorials and BINGO, the perfect tutorial for an "On the Go" reading pillow.

I followed the tutorial loosely... just the basic idea but made the pillow a tad bigger, the pocket a tad shorter and lined it with coordinating fabric, and made the handle out of fabric with fusible fleece for stability instead of ribbon.

Tada, here it is.....  The Batman Pillow!!

I am so pleased with the way this turned out.  I think this is going to be my "go to" gift for the next few gifts we need.  I can see these pillows in all kinds of great fabrics to match kid's rooms, colors and themes.

Thanks for stopping by.

Oreo Update

Last week I mentioned taking Oreo to the vet, thanks to those of you who expressed concern.  Long story short, he has Disc Disease that weenie dogs get often.  He got doggie morphine for pain,  is on crate rest (doggie bed rest) for two weeks and is taking something like Vicodin to keep him semi sedated.    It’s going a lot better than I expected, well at least it did this weekend.  We’ll see how he does a full day in the crate while no one is home today.

Here’s a sweet picture of Micaela and Oreo taken at the vet last Thursday.  Poor little guy just wanted to be held and cuddled, Micaela was so worried about him.    Will keep updating everyone on progress, thanks for reading this far.

It's for the Birds Blog Hop Day 4

HI there--
Today is Day 4 of the It's for the Birds Blog Hop.  Thank you to Madame Samm at Sew We Quilt and Mary for hosting and cheerleading.

What a day it has been.  I took the afternoon off to finish my project and our dog became ill so instead of sewing, we ended up spending the afternoon and part of the evening at the vet!  Ack...

Well here it is... I literally just finished this and quickly took pictures to be on by midnight EST.

Introducing my Bold & Funky Bird...

This is a pillow to add to the many already on my 8 year old daughter's recently redecorated room.  I made a pompom pillow two weeks ago for the Shake Your Pom Poms blog hop.  I wish I could have gotten the whole bed, but she is literally asleep in the other half and I was just praying I would not wake her.

This pattern is from Virginia Lindsay at Gingercake Patterns & Design.  I've had my eye on it for a while and this bird blog hop was the perfect excuse to buy it.  I'll be posting some other bird projects in the next post so be sure to scroll down.

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to visit the other ladies on the blog hop today.

Happy Birding!

Other Bird Projects

Here are some other Bird projects I have done recently.  All of these have been featured on my blog in the past.

Bird Pin Cushion.

Bird themed Burp Cloth

If you count Owls as Birds, I've made several Owl items, these are a few of my favorites.

Embroidery on an apron for my Mother In Law
A card to match the Apron above.
An Owl Pin Cushion Sewing Kit.
 A denim Owl purse.

 Another owl pin cushion.
Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great day!

Cowgirl Zipper Bag

I have a local friend that has made my little zipper pouches her "go to" gift for little girl birthday parties.  Last week she texted me looking for something for a little girl that was having a birthday party at Storybook Ranch, a local venue for western themed events.

This is what I came up with.  I was originally going to use denim but it was too stiff to double turn inside out plus add lining, so I opted for this blue tone on tone paisley I got as a remnant at one of my LQS.  I love the Giddy font, I was happy the recipeint's name had an i so I could use a star to dot it.

I think it turned out pretty cute and I hear the little girl was happy to receive it.  Thanks for stopping by.

My Spring Garden

It's begining to look alot like Spring in my garden.  Many of perrineals are on their way back and starting to bloom!  Here are a few of my favorite snapshots taken this weekend.

Snapdragons next to the birdbath.  These are on their third year coming them!

More Snapdragons, a mum on the left and Agusta Duelberg Salvia in the background.  Love this little birdhouse I have sitting on a stump.

These are my Knock Out Roses in the front of the house.  These are on their third fourth year and doing great.  Back in February I prunned them down to about 2 feet and they came back stronger than ever!
I love this garden flag with artwork from Mary Engelbreit.  "The Goal of Life: Living in Agreement with Nature".  Love that quote and Mary's artwork.
Our little recycled metal dachshund sits on this tree stump slice I found on the side of the road about three years ago.  Husband thought I was crazy when I made him pull over to grab three (really wanted to grab them all).  We were about 200 miles away from home...
My attempt at "thrill, fill and spill" in a flower pot in our front porch.  Zinnias, lantana, verbina and monkey grass all in one pot.    Love my God Answers Prayers stake.
Well, that's my little mini tour for now.  I'll be posting more pictures as more things bloom.  Hope you are having a great day!

Farewell Fiesta

Buenos Dias everyone,

Yesterday we had a Farewell Fiesta for one of my coworkers at work.  Somehow, I was given the task to plan the party.  How does that happen to me all of the time?

Our coworker is relocating to Pennsylvania so obviously leaving Texas.  I asked her what she would miss the most "Texas BBQ or Tex Mex cuisine".  Once she said Tex-Mex, that was all I needed to start planning the menu and theme for the party.

Now PLEASE keep in mind this party was at work, on our conference room table no less so I could not do things to the extent that I would do at home.  I planned a simple gathering at the end of the day so everyone could come by and bid our friend farewell.  I played Mexican music but I had to keep the volume low--- because we were at know what I mean.  Along the same lines, I served lemonade instead of get the picture.

The menu was chips and salsa from a favorite local restaurant, El Fenix, queso made by one co-worker, corn salsa by another co-worker, Delimex taquitos with three different fillings, and Nothing Bundt Cakes bundtinis for dessert.

Here is the Fiesta table.
All these dishes and decorations are from my personal collection.  I have an extensive collection of stuff in this theme because obviously I am Mexican (LOL) and love seasonal impractical entertaining stuff that you only use once or twice a year.   I love getting the chance to use them but hate the hassel of digging them out of my dish closet, wrapping in bubble wrap and carrying off.  Oh well....

Here is Cindy with the table.  I made her wear that hat in many pictures...LOL.  My office door is in the back ground.  You can see I hung one of Micaela's little Mexican dresses from when she was a baby on our dry erase board on a make shift clothesline. (My boss thought it was "ineresting", but hey it covered the white board.    You can also see the little bull pinata that was the focal point of our table too.

Here is a close up of some of the bundtinis.  Nothing Bundt Cakes is a national franchise for delicious bundt cakes, they have around a dozen different flavors.  We are lucky to have a location less than two miles from our office.  I decorated the bundtinis with fiesta picks I got at the craft store.

Here are the Delimex taquitos.

If you have never had these they are great.  The are in the frozen food section at the grocery store.  You can deep or pan fry them or bake them in the over.  I prefer frying them when it's a small quantity at home but these we baked off in the oven of our break room.  We split them in half so they would be more like finger food.

Here is the delicious corn salsa made by one of our co-workers.  It was delicioius and I will share the recipe when I get it from her.

Here is a close up of my fabulous letter dishes which are one of my most recent additions to my collection of entertaining stuff.  I fell in love when I saw these on Pinterest and quickly ordered some to spell out our daughters name.  Over the last 18 months I have been adding more letters to my collection so I can spell out more words.  (it's quite addictive but oh so fun to have them on your buffet table).  I've even started to give them as gifts and everyone seems to love them.  I realized last week that if I ordered an S, I could spell out fiesta... so here is the letter S making a debut with other letters...LOL.
The Farewell Fiesta was FUN.  Cindy enjoyed it and everyone enjoyed socializing with people from other departments on a casual basis.  The last time we had a farewell party in our department was about five years ago... people just don't leave very often so it might be a while before we do this again...

Thanks for reading this far and I hope you have a great Cinco de Mayo manana!
