McKMQG Ornament Swap

Here is the ornament I made for the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild Annual Ornament Exchange.  It's three different six point stars, stuffed and stacked.  The pattern is by DerStickbaer.

 Here is the adorable ornament I received.  I had seen this on Instagram and I am so glad the stars aligned so I could "steal" it from another member in the swap.  Isn't it adorable?

The McKinney Modern Quilt Guild meets every first Tuesday of the month at Stitched with Love store at 6:30 pm.

Bookmark Swap McKMQG

We had a book and bookmark swap at our September meeting, this is what I came up with.  I couldn't think of colors so I made the bookmark match the book.  The spool is an in the hoop pattern I modified by adding elastic.  I think it turned out pretty neat.  

McKinney Modern Quilt Guild Pillow Scrap Swap

At the McKMQG May meeting we exchanged bags of scraps.  The challenge was to make a 16x16 pillow.

These are the fabrics I received.  I was kind of at a loss on what to do so to start I pieced 2" strips together.

My partner is very earthy and has often made items with trees so I decided to make a tree be the center focal point.  I did raw edge applique because I thought it was more "earthy".

I added her last name to the bottom to make it more personal.  I also decided to frame the tree applique with two simple stitch lines and then with the pieced fabric strips.

  Here is the finished pillow.

For the back I used a solid.  I used buttons and hair elastics for a modern closure.

This was a really fun swap.  I don't usually work with blues, yellows and oranges together so it was nice to step out of my box.   We exchanged the pillows last night and my partner loved it, now I think I need to make one for our house!   Thanks for stopping by!

Canadian Visitor in McKinney

Took the morning off last Friday to meet a new quilty Canadian friend from Instagram (social media).  Sheila is from Saskatchewan and in my #texasminiquiltswap, AND she just happened to be coming to McKinney for a wedding at Adriatica this weekend.  We hit two of our three local quilt stores, Stitched With Love & The Quilt Asylum!   So fun meeting online friends in person and I love it when out of towners spend $$$ in McKinney!  #shoplocal

McKMQG Ornament Exchange

Here is the ornament I made for the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild ornament exchange.  This was a fun little project made in the hoop.  The pattern is my Embroidery Garden.

Basket received

This is the fabulous basket I received in the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild Basket Swap from Elizabeth W. The tote is large, the handle part can be folded down to make a basket and it's completely reversible. How cool is that! These are the fabrics I've used in my Sewing Room so it will be great for toting stuff... It's so fun to do swaps, thank you Elizabeth! #mckmqg

Basket made for MckMQG swap

Yesterday was our monthly McKinney Modern Quilt Guild meeting.  These are the items I made for the basket swap.  We actually exchanged bags of fabric last month so that was a fun twist.  My partner included a lot of fabric in her bag so I made a few extra things in addition to the basket.   A mugrug and matching mug that said "stitch your stress away", a layered flower pin cushion and of course a zipper bag -- which is something I make for every swap.

The basket was big and I felt like I needed to put something in it so it would not be so empty so I quickly embroidered a fuzzy fleece throw with some of the left over fabric.  (I keep these blank throws on hand in case I need to make a quick gift.)

I think the throw with a C turned out really cute.  My partner seemed to really like everything and I really enjoyed sewing with fabrics that I would normally not buy.  Thanks for stopping by.

Fabric Bin

This is the fabric bin/basket I received from Julie 'Hopkins' Laidlaw in the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild Swap last month.    You might recall the swap I made BettyPat with her fabric in late June.  I was in Hawaii the day of the swap but Julie and I finally connected a couple of weeks ago and I was in awe of the gorgeous bin she made for me. 

 

This bin, basket or swimming pool (as Julie affectionately refers to it) is gorgeous, GIANT (more than 12 inches tall and 18 inches wide) and I love it!

The cool thing about this swap is that the recipient supplied the fabric. I supplied a variety of the fabrics that I have used to decorate and make things for my sewing room. You can see all of the pillows on my daybed in the background.  I actually tidied up a bit to take the picture.  I'll share new updated pictures of my sewing area in the next few weeks.  Thanks for stopping by! 

Fabric Basket Swap MMQG

A Modern Quilt Guild just started in McKinney.  When we met in June, we exchanged bags of fabric for a fabric basket swap. 

This is what I received....

Holy cow was that ALOT of different fabric strips and one half yard of pink solid.  Gulp!

I decided I would use as many of the strips as I could and make the basket itself pink.  I tried piecing the strips together several different ways until I decided 2" strips diagonally worked best.  Here are the strips pieced together. 

I trimmed the strip to 1.5" and top stitched it all around the bag.  There are 16 different fabrics all the way around.  I was originally going to have the top edge fold down but decided to embroider the recipient's name on it and just top stitch a decorative stitch around the top. 

This is how the basket turned out.

 

 

I decided to make a few things to fill the basket.  First a wonky pieced pin cushion.  Instead of leaving the seams plain, I top stitched a decorative stitch that looked like beads and added a big B to the center panel.  I think this turned out pretty cute.

The next thing I made was a crisscross tissue holder.  I didn't have enough of all of the fabrics so I pieced strips together to make it work... the inside is "lined" with different fabrics. 

The last item I made was a zipper pouch.  If you follow my blog you know I have made many of these.  This is actually the first one I make in a solid color.
